Sleepless Until Seattle

First off, those of you who have not received your books yet, don't panic, the drought is over we have enough now to take care of everybody, a nice discount on your next orders to those of you who had to wait a bit longer due to the crazy demand (bring it to my attention and I'll take care of you, personally, I'll cover your shipping charges or something, we'll figure something out.

I expected craziness but this is ridiculous! Again, I can't thank YOU enough for the tremendous support and the hopes you've given me in making this project a success.

I'm writing this from my hotel room in Dearborne, Michigan, my flight to Detroit was delayed for a few hours right out of Newark, NJ and I missed my connecting flight to Seattle, which means I'm going to spend the night here and won't be at the Seattle Emerald City Con until noon on Saturday. As always you're invited to stop by our Brandstudio booth # 715 at the show, Sean "Cheeks" Galloway will be at the show and Wade Schin co-author of "So Now What Do We Do" will be signing and selling his brand spankin' new book alongside Yours B. Truly.

Come say hello and take a look at the books in person, even if you don't buy anything, just come over and bring your sketchbooks, identify yourselves as friends of this blog and I'll be more than happy to desecrate your drawing pads at no cost to you, of course.

See ya in Seattle!

CALL FOR ENTRIES 2007

As the first order of business, Brandstudio Press LLC is proud to announce two brand new, special books. I mean, these are very, very special books. I will start a tradition right here and now.

'You know these publishing companies out there, putting out these nice books, chock full of artwork from all corners of the world. They produce these annuals, like the Society of overrated illustrators which publishes "Illustrators 49" etc. etc...ad infinitum. Where they ask artists to submit pieces for inclusion in these compilations. The artists fill out a form and send anywhere from $20 to $100 bucks to be judged by a bunch of "professionals" most of whom have no real talent to speak of.

If your work makes it into these annuals/competitions there's a lot of prestige and pride that goes along with it, but no money, of course. There are no real prizes to win except the "Gold" or "Silver" medal and 3 copies of the book or something cheap like that. All the folks who didn't make it into the book get the shaft and lose anywhere from 20 to 100 bucks, a chunk of self-respect and artistic confidence. Well, that's nothing new or original; design magazines have been doing that for ages.

Now, I would love to start an annual competition book myself. This book would not be any different than those other books; it will be beautifully printed in full, glorious color and it would showcase the best art from all over the planet. Same fucking thing but without the false pretense, the hypocrisy and the entry fees. Oh! . . . and without the lame judges.

First annual book: 'EYE CANDY FROM STRANGERS 1.0' FULL COLOR 200 PAGES HARDCOVER 9X12.5
Deadline: May 1st 2007

This is an official call for entries for all of those who love to draw women. Yeah, I know somebody else beat me to it, there's a compilation out there already which "celebrates" the female form but I don't like that book, there's lots of crap in there and some of those judges can't draw a real woman if their lives depended on it.

THE CRITERIA
For this book I will be the sole judge, if I like it, it gets printed, as simple as that! No Committee, No Fees, No Panel of Judges, No Bullshit! Also, there will be no Silver Medals or Gold Medals, just a nice sense of pride for doing a great job and being the best that you can possibly be. Art is not a fuckin' competition. What is this? . . . a freakin' sport?. . .sheesh!.

The art to be included in the book will be selected based solely on its artistic merit. I will make no distinction between professionals and amateurs, if J. Scott Campbell or Picasso submit a mediocre effort, they won't make the cut. :)

WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU?
Your contact info will be listed (Website, blog, e-mail address, mailing address, phone # or whatever you wish to make public) this is entirely up to you. Your work will be seen by many, some of whom might even offer you a job, who knows? I can't promise you that you'll get work from showcasing your work in this book but since the book will be distributed worldwide anything is possible, you have nothing to lose and a whole lot to gain.

In addition, if your work is featured in the book, you'll receive one copy of the volume and if you'd like to purchase more books I will be more than happy to give them to you at half the price so you can make a couple of bucks (you pay for the shipping) You can give them to family members or even send one to your high school Art teacher, the one who said you'll never get your stuff published. In your face Mr. Weinsberg!

The front cover will feature one of the entries (selected at my discretion) as well as the back cover. You will be notified if your art made it on the cover or back cover. I guess to be featured on the covers will be the equivalent of Gold and Silver Medals. For those of you who like competitions.

SUBMISSIONS GUIDELINES
There is no particular theme for this book; any genre, style, rendering technique will be accepted, just as long as the art rocks hard! Cartoony or super real, loose or tight, abstract or figurative, caricarure, animation turnarounds, character concepts, drawings, sketches, inkings, from life or from reference or from your brain. Just make sure that if you draw from reference you're not acting like a camera, use the reference as a starting point, I'd stay away from exact likenesses of actresses unless you're caricaturing them. Make it your own, this is about YOU, submit the work that most represents you, your style, your strengths.

This book will not be about "celebrating" women or any of that used car salesman garbage, it will celebrate art, the art of drawing women & the art of painting women (digitally or traditionally) it will be about excellence (or at least what I consider excellence)

Like I said, there are no fees, the rules are simple: You submit via email, to: annual1@brandstudio.com a low resolution (72 to 150 DPI) jpg, gif or tif image of your entry.
You can enter as many pieces as you want.
The work must be original, none of that licensed character stuff, no copyright violations.
You must own the rights to your entries.

IF YOU MAKE THE CUT
If your entry is selected, you must provide a high resolution image 300 to 450 DPI, the page size is 8.5x12 inches. You agree to give Brandstudio Press LLC permission to print your work one time only under the First North American Printing Rights.

You assume all responsibilities and hold Brandstudio Press LLC and its associates harmless of any and all litigation resulting from any and all copyright infringements on the material submitted by you for inclusion in our annuals.

Whereas The management cannot be held responsible for any accidents, incidents, loss of property or life or limb. And Whereas For damage caused by lightning, earthquakes, floods, fire, frost or frippery of any sort, kind or condition, consequently the undersigned take responsibility. Whereas During the term of this Agreement you will become and remain, at your sole cost and expense and at our request, a member in good standing of any then properly designated labor unions, guilds, or other organizations, as defined and determined under the applicable law, pertaining persons performing services of the type and the character to be performed here and hereunder. Nothing herein contained shall be deemed to require the violation of any written agreement executed between us and any such labor union, guild or other organization which may be in effect at the time of the execution of this agreement, and wherever there is any conflict between the provisions of this agreement and any other, the latter shall prevail, but in such event, the provisions of this agreement so affected shall be curtailed and limited only to the events necessary to permit compliance with such payment of any additional compensation it shall be at the minimum that is permitted thereunder. . . Yaddah, yaddah, yaddah, . . . legal shtuff, legal, shtuff, one, two, three, testing, testing. . . is this on?. . .etc. etc. etc. . . . . .

Don't worry much about this Willy Wonka legal crap, if your art makes the cut I will send you two full pages worth of legalese to sign, same shit as the other publishers, in fact, I just copied some of that stuff and asked a lawyer to change it so it won't be recognizable. -Just kiddin' Mr. Lawyer Sir- don't sue me.

Second book: 'BLOG BOOGALOO" A Directory of Art Blogs.FULL COLOR 200 PAGES HARDCOVER 9X12.5
Deadline: May 1st 2007

This book will be nothing but a yellow pages of art blogs: comics, animation, illustration and anything artistic that ends in "ation" .

If you'd like to be included, send us your blog address to: blogaloo@brandstudio.com if your blog makes the cut it will be featured in our book, along with your contact info and one or two full pages of your work. We'll seek wide distribution of this book to further your cause and help promote your blog and art.

Just like with our other books, original images, a must. All blogs to be included will be chosen at our discretion.

Deadline: May 1st 2007, both these books are scheduled for July release.

I am seriously considering printing a soft cover version to give away to selected Animation studios and design firms. This will depend on the amount of entries we receive.

Abrazos,
-Alberto

Yo, Check it!

Just got back from LA after attending the Wizard Con. Pretty lame show if you're not a big comics person. The whole thing looked like a ghost town on Sunday. As usual we managed to have a good time at the expense of others because that's what we do.

Book Report
Thanks for pre ordering the book, the response has exceeded my expectations and I'm doing the impossible to get your books out to you in a timely manner, hang in there, we're understaffed and overworked but the books are coming. By next week the Brandstudio Press online store will be fully functional, offering the entire spring catalog. Thanks, once again for your tremendous show of support for what we're building, it's greatly appreciated!

Be back with more later.

MAKE ROOM ON YOUR SHELVES . . .

. . . .And ask your boss for a raise.

A friend just asked me: "How does it feel to have your own publishing company?" I had to think about that one for a minute, I thought about it long and hard and then I thought about it some more and after all that thinking I still can't comprehend how people always manage to screw up this Art Publishing business. I feel like Charlie, right after Willy Wonka handed him the keys to the Chocolate Factory. Woohooooooo!!!

Business? . . . Fuck business!

Hey man!, want some candy?

Yeah, sure!. . .how much?

$24.95

THE SECRET PROJECT IS NO LONGER A SECRET

That's right! No more secrets!

It gives me great pleasure to announce to you, the greatest audience in the entire blogosphere, the birth of my new baby.

This announcement has added significance and special meaning for me because it comes at a time of celebration and happiness. Today, March 8th 2007 marks the second anniversary of The Diary of a Process Junkie Tears are rolling down my cheeks as I write this sentence, my heart bursting with pride and joy as I recall our humble beginnings. There I was, bored out of brains and loins, cruising for free internet porn, when all of the sudden it hit me: "Why not start a blog!" I asked myself, and naturally I responded: "Let's NOT!, too much work! C'mon already! Why look for another distraction?", I was stunned by my negative reaction at first but then I composed myself and fired back: "Distraction from what? You do nothing but sleep all day and goof off at the drawing table all night, listening to music and watching free web porn, since when is all that considered work?". Touché! I couldn't argue with myself, I was right.

I don't want to get romantic here but it does seem like yesterday when I wrote my first post, aptly entitled: "I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE FUCK I'M DOING . . . but I'll figure it out one day". Sadly, I haven't figure it all out just yet, but Hey! that's OK, you guys don't know crap either. Main thing is we're all in this mess together, learning as we go, humming along when we don't know the words to the song. Given our artistic and inquisitive nature, what could be better? . . . Uh! wait. . . don't answer that! .

The Birth of Something Black, Red and Yellow
Nine months in the making, countless sleepless hours, one thousand and one tongue burritos and an equal amount of Coronas. And of course, plenty of sweat, blood and tears, but no fears, just passion and stubbornness. A lot of people have said: "Don't do it!, man, Don't Jump! you WILL get hurt" but did I listen to the nay sayers? . . .Yes, I did, but I ignored them all, 'cause that's the way we roll.

This is the secret project I've been telling you about —Actually. . . there is another secret project, of lesser secret-project-worthiness if you will, which I'll share with you momentarily— but this here is the mother of all secret projects for reals.

Now, after I tell you what this secret is, I hope you don't do what Tatiana Wojkowitz did after she saw me peeing in the public swimming pool back in the 8th grade; she was the kind of girl who couldn't keep a secret to save her own hairy skin, 'you know? she had to tell everyone at school and worse, she added stuff! . . .what a wench!!

Sorry about that, I get easily sidetracked. Now, where were we? . . . Ah, yes! the secret project!

'You know how I'm always ranting and raving like that "Mad Money" guy on cable TV. Talking shit about the comics industry and the jerks who run it. How DC, Marvel and the sweaty fanboys have ruined American comics. Well, I stopped talking about it because it was just plain dumb to criticize and not offer a solution or an alternative. Now I'm finally going to do something about it! I'm putting my money (and other people's money) where my pie hole is.

Drum roll please!
. . . . .I give you BRANDSTUDIO PRESS!

I know what you're thinking: "Wait a minute! that's old news" "Isn't that your own self-publishing outfit?"

Ding-Dong, You're Wrong!
Brandstudio Press is now a full-fledge publishing company. We'll be publishing and co-publishing a ton of art books and sketchbooks by the best artists in Animation, Comics, Illustration & anything that has to do with great art, we have 9 books scheduled to hit store shelves in 2 weeks and at least 30 more titles seeing the light of day this year alone. Next year I'll venture into comics.

Our little publishing company is revolutionary in many ways, unfortunately I can't divulge just how revolutionary we are. All I can say is we are in it for the passion not for the money (and that's not just a tag line), everybody knows there is no money in this art business of shit, except for the 2 or 3 assholes who control distribution.

Our business model doesn't rape the artist, encourages and rewards artistic freedom and favors originality and creativity. We are seriously commited to excellence and our book projects are chosen on the basis of artistic merit and not on genre, style or trend worthiness. We have enlisted the services of the best printers and book distributors in the business. I have modeled this company after my own philosophy and personality, that means: We are independent, we don't give a fuck, we couldn't care less whether our artists are household names or total unknowns, art students or veteran professionals, mainstream, low-brow, high-brow, middle-brow, digital or traditional, men or women or anything in between, if they have the passion and the chops that's enough for us.

We don't specialize in one thing or the other, we don't categorize but we're aware of how things work in the corporate arena. If the art is dope and we like it, we'll find a way to publish it and distribute it.

Our books are of the highest quality, those 9 titles I told you about earlier are full color off-set, oversize hardcovers, none of that print-on-demand stuff.

I will give you the list of titles next week and you shall see for yourselves.

Until then, have a great weekend, I'll tell you the other secret next week.

Many thanks to those of you whom I had the pleasure of meeting at the San Francisco Wondercon show.
I'll see you at the Los Angeles WizardWorld next weekend.

Abrazos,
-Alberto
